Round 4, 2003 SCORE Desert Series LOS ANGELES (April 16, 2003)-- Following a highly-successful debut last year, SCORE International has confirmed that Herbst Gaming along with the Southern Nevada cities of Henderson and Boulder City have agreed to sponsor this summer's 2nd Annual SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250-- the World's Richest Desert Race. With plans for ancillary events from concerts, fireworks, a pit crew challenge, a charity bowling event, a charity slot tournament and the theater premiere of the HDtv 90-minute documentary film on SCORE's legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250 has quickly become one of the top motorsports events held annually in the Silver State. Featuring the world's top desert racers competing in 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks, the SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250 will be Round 4 of the six-race 2003 SCORE Desert Series. The multi lap, elapsed-time race will be run over an 86-mile loop on the southeast and southwest sides of Henderson. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year as the World's Foremost Desert Racing Series, the SCORE Desert Series returns to Mexico for the second of three races in Baja California. The 35th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 will be held May 30-June 1, in Ensenada, Mexico. "SCORE, the city of Henderson, the City of Boulder City and Herbst Gaming are equally enthusiastic to again present the SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250 and plans for more great SCORE racing and tremendous ancillary events are being finalized now," said Sal Fish, CEO of SCORE International since 1974. "After the great success last year, the enthusiasm level is even higher this year and the Henderson hospitality community has become more pro-active and Herbst Gaming has again committed significant resources to promoting the event through its vast network of businesses and hotel/casinos." The actual course will run on both sides of the McCullough Mountains, almost equally split on land owned by Boulder City and recreational use land overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. The course will be bordered on the east by Nevada State Highway 93 and on the west by Interstate 15 and Las Vegas Boulevard South. Helping secure both the Henderson and Boulder City sponsorship of the race, Bud Pico, Manager, Tourism and Sales for the Henderson Convention Center and Visitors Bureau, is spearheading the organization and execution of all the ancillary events being developed. "Henderson and Boulder City received incredible economic and media exposure through this SCORE race last year, making it even easier to say yes this year," said Pico, who previously played a significant role in starting the SCORE races in Laughlin 10 years ago and Primm nine years ago. "SCORE more than delivered last year, and several of our resorts are already sold out for this year's race." Starting with a $10,000 bonus to the first overall finisher, the World's Richest Desert Race will include nearly $35,000 in added purse, a 50 percent payback of entry fees and significant contingency postings. SCORE officials report that the final cash and contingency prizes could even pass the $500,000 mark. For all Pro classes with a minimum 'Lucky Seven' starters, the winner will receive an added $1,000 and the runner-up will receive an added $500 from the bonus purse. Instead of the normal computerized drawing for starting positions in each class being held several weeks prior to the race, a live drawing will be held Thursday of race week (July 10) at Terrible's Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. Entries will receive their vehicle numbers in the order received and all entries received by SCORE by June 20 will be included in the live drawing. Late entries will receive the next available vehicle number and start position. The 2003 SCORE Desert Series started with the most unique and the shortest race and will finish with the oldest and most well known desert race. After kicking off the season with the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in Laughlin, 90 miles south of Las Vegas, it will conclude Nov. 13-16 with the always-memorable Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Round 2 and 3 are both be held in Mexico. The 17th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 was held March 15, followed by the 35th Tecate SCORE Baja 500, May 30-June 1. Rounds 4 and 5 will both be held in Southern Nevada. After the second SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250 (July 9-12) race in Henderson, Nev., the 8th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will be held Sept. 12-13 in Primm, Nev., 35 miles south of Las Vegas. SCORE International, started in 1973, continues to be the premier sanctioning body in the sport of desert racing worldwide. SCORE races feature 17 pro and 2 sportsman classes for cars and trucks in U.S. races and seven more pro and 3 sportsman classes for motorcycles and ATVs for the three races held annually in Mexico. Races in the U.S. average 150 entries, 225 in Mexico. For information on the ancillary events being organized, contact Charlene Ham at the Henderson Convention and Visitors Bureau at (702) 565-5197.
