PCI Racing to Roll into SCORE Henderson Event
Last year's inaugural race at Henderson, located just a short drive from downtown Las Vegas, was significant not only for its overwhelming success as an event, but also for race day temperatures that reached over 120 degrees. For desert veteran Steinberger, the day was an especially memorable one from inside the cockpit; "At one point in the race, all I can remember is that the bottom of my feet started to feel like liquid," he explained with a laugh. "It was hot. I mean it was really hot. I looked down and realized that the bottoms of my shoes were actually melting from the aluminum floor." The team's thirst to take their first Trophy-Truck victory overshadows the physical and mental challenge of running a two-truck effort at Henderson. Currently fifth in SCORE class points and second in the Best-In-The-Desert series, Steinberger and Jones will each pilot their PCI Race Radios / Off-Road.com / BFGoodrich / Hella / Borla / Neo / Sign Pros / Mastercraft / F&L Fuels- backed Fords to increase their odds of taking home the event's $10,000 first-place prize. As has been the case all season, both vehicles are being prepared for Henderson under the watchful eye of Barry Beacham and his Race Preparation Services' (RPS) crew. Jones and Steinberger managed to finish that event with the help of team Webmaster (www.pciracing.com) and Carter Design Works owner Eric Hoffacker, who might also serve as co-rider in Henderson. Also scheduled to join Hoffacker and Beacham in the right seat will be famed extreme sports video producer Daina Nicholson, whose Desert Syndicate Productions is putting the finishing touches on a new desert off-road racing production. Just in case, long-time team crew chief and frequent race driver Dane Cardone will be available should Steinberger or Jones need relief. As intense as the racing among the SCORE Trophy Trucks is expected to be in Henderson, the pressure to perform for the PCI team is as compelling a backdrop as the desert heat itself. Despite being a front runner at nearly every race since being formed in late 2001, Steinberger and Jones share an equal desire to finally put one of their trucks into the Trophy-Truck winner's circle. Racing both trucks so closely to the Las Vegas to Reno event is seen by many as an impossible task, but both men acknowledge the value of doubling their chances to win in a season that will continue in September at the SCORE Primm 300 and finish with the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in November. Despite the pressure, heat and intensity, Steinberger is also looking forward to reaching another milestone later in the month. The Southern California native will celebrate his 10th anniversary to wife and dedicated supporter Kellyann Steinberger, with whom Scott is raising three young children. "What can I say, she puts up with all this craziness and I can't help but thank her for giving me the best 10 years of my life, "he concludes. The 2003 PCI Motorsports off-road team is supported by PCI Race Radios, Off-Road.com, BFGoodrich, Hella, Borla, Neo, Sign Pros, Fleshgear, Desert Syndicate, Sign Methods, Mastercraft, F & L and special help from Dave Wachter Paint Design.
