Mark Handley / Solar Racing Beat Baja!

After two previous Baja defeats at the San Felipe 250 and the Baja 500, Mark Handley gets his first finish in Baja at the Best in the Desert BajaMex 300 World Championships.

The race started downtown Ensenada, then a quick charge down the white sandy beach, then inland to the brutal terrain that is Baja. A flat tire at race mile 71 put them down early, before heading down the coast for 50 miles, and then across the middle of Baja to farming community of Valle de Trinidad.

A tie-rod needed to be changed before heading up the infamous Goat Trail. This was to be no ordinary adventure. What was typically dry hot desert was now flash flood central. Thunder and Lightning and ton’s of rain and hail. The F-150 ran great and the Goodyear Mud Terrains kept the progress rolling forward through mudbogs and “new” river crossings. The torrents were more than 3 feet deep at sections (rumors have it both an Expedition and a Hummer were moved by the waters). Persistence prevailed and we it made though the 30 plus miles of flooded terrain.

Back in the sunshine, was the final run from the deserts, back through the coastal mountains and back to the beach. Just about to finish the 306 miles, the power steering failed at mile 303. The failure was a result of a serpentine belt coming off. This eventually led to an inability to steer the big F-150 and getting stuck in the windy, whooped-out, overgrown, sandy wash.

With some assistance from the race officials, we were up and running and now powering through the remaining silt beds to make it to the “short course” and the finish line at the Estero Beach Resort.

Final result 4th in class and 43 overall out of 66 car and trucks. (80 bikes and quads also competed)

Overall, one of the most amazing (awesome, challenging, technical, scenic, brutal, wet) races yet. A more detailed race summary is attached.

Milestones:
Longest race driven 308 miles vs. 268 at Vegas to Reno
1st Baja Finish vs. DNF’s @ San Felipe and Baja 500
3 Best in the Desert Races Entered, 3 Finishes
