Mark Handley teams with ACE Motorsports
The vehicle of choice was the Mighty ACE Motorsports 2002 Ford Expedition. Driving duties were split between Marc Stein, Mark Handley, Mike McComas, and Travis Walser. The race started in downtown Ensenada on Friday morning with 272 starters! The race definitely lived up to its reputation. There were lots of familiar sections of the race course that made use of previous courses, however, mixed in were some crazy new sections. Many of the racers concluded this was one of the toughest, if not the toughest, BAJA 1000 ever! In one 100 mile section, a section that had never been raced on before, there must have been over 30 disabled vehicles. Multiples of cars were stuck in the various silt beds, several in ditches, several off the side of the mountain, and some just broken. And that was before the 300 mile mark! The Expedition ran flawlessly and was gaining on the 1st place truck, then bad luck struck, not far after race mile 700. A chase vehicle blocking the course caused our truck to get stuck. After being stuck for a while, the truck was running fast again when the wheel studs sheared. Quick repairs got the truck up and running again, but by this time First Place was lost and it was time to preserve Second. Final time on course was just over 26 hours, and the Mighty Expedition takes 2nd Place in the Stock Full Class! Special thanks to our sponsors (Ford, Goodyear, Bilstein, Currie, Hella) chase team, friends and family for making this race possible!
