Team HUMMER® Heads Season Finale at 'Las Vegas 200'

Reno, NV - Dec. 2, 2003: Team HUMMER barely got the trucks off the trailer from our victorious trip to the Tecate/SCORE ‘Baja 1000’ before it was time to load them back up for the final race of the season, Best in the Desert’s ‘Las Vegas 200’, Dec, 5-7 in the desert south of Las Vegas, Nevada. In fact we didn’t even unpack the box vans or pit trailer. Since there was work to be done on both race trucks before the Vegas 200, we just unloaded the trucks and pulled tools out of the support vehicles, as needed. “With only 10 days to get the trucks ready for our next race, there was no time to make major alterations to either race vehicle,” said Sam Cothrun, chief mechanic on the H2 program. “After 800 miles of Baja racing we needed to go over the trucks and give them a thorough prep before we could put them back on the race course. We also had to make some adjustments since the Nevada desert is so much different then the deserts of Baja.”

Chad Hall will solo the race in the #8102 Team HUMMER H1 Pick-up with team mechanics, Brad Falin and Rob Henderson at his side. As in previous years, the course consists of three 75 mile loops with three stationary pit locations. Unlike the ‘Baja 1000’, where race teams are allowed a combination of fixed pit locations and chase vehicles equipped with spare parts and mechanics, the drivers themselves must make all necessary repairs on course if they can’t get to one of the stationary pits. Attention to detail when preparing the race trucks for such a short event is critical, particularly on a rocky course like the ‘Las Vegas 200’. “The H1 came through the Baja 1000 without any significant damage,” commented team mechanic Rob Henderson. “We revalved all of the shocks, replaced the ball joints and put some new springs up front. Other than that, a standard prep seemed to be all it needed.”

Team HUMMER’s Josh Hall will take the #4121 H2 SUV the entire distance with Sam Cothrun and John Cumming sharing the second seat. Team owner, Rod Hall will oversee the various pit operations at this race and spend the day watching his two sons carry on the Hall family tradition. Not much was needed to get the H2 ready for the ‘Las Vegas 200’. Like the H1, the SUV came through the ‘Baja 1000’ without sustaining much damage. The team prepped the truck, changed the upper control arms, revalved the front shocks and replaced a worn bushing in the front differential. Certainly there are some new modifications on our list of things to do as we continue to develop the H2 into a more competitive race truck, but 10 days doesn’t allow much time to try out fresh ideas and still test the vehicle. We expect a good performance from the H2 in it’s current configuration and expect to improve on our third place ‘Baja 1000’ finish.

This should be a fascinating race. Being the final event of the season, everyone will be on the gas from beginning to end in a race for bragging rights. Team HUMMER will pull out all the stops in going for the win in both classes and we expect no less from the competition. Prior to this race there were other considerations as many were positioning themselves in an attempt to win their year-end points championships. Going into this event, the year end points titles in the pick-up and SUV classes are all but decided so this final race should bring out the most competitive spirit in every race team in a ‘winner take all’ quest for victory. This is what racing is all about, to reach deep down inside of yourself, your crew and your machine and spend every physical and mechanical resource at your disposal in an all out dash to be the first across the finish. There’s nothing like having the best vehicle, the best driver and the best crew going into this sort of showdown.
