Win Number 57 Nets 10th Career Championship for Scott Douglas

Henderson, Nevada -- It was a perfect ending to a nearly perfect season. All Scott Douglas needed to win the Class 3100 Best In The Desert (BITD) 2004 Championship was finish the Henderson’s Terrible 300 Desert Race. Other competitors were certain Douglas would take it easy and cruise to a safe championship.

Yeah right. Not only did the Douglas Motorsports Ford Explorer win the Henderson’s Terrible 300, they did so in convincing fashion. It wasn’t like the team had anything to prove. Prior to the final race, the Rancho Ford Explorer finished first in every race of the 2004 season except one. The race they didn’t win, Vegas to Reno, the team scored a second place finish when Douglas climbed out of the truck after the first 100 miles so he could fly to Crandon, Wisconsin to race in the CORR Series, turning driving duties over to Tim Lawrence. Team orders in the long, rough race were to survive and finish in the points. Douglas was thrilled with the podium finish.

“Our goal was to show just how tough the new fully independent suspension Ford Explorer is,” commented Douglas. “The truck has been bullet proof. We raced it hard all year, it didn’t make sense to change our style for the final race of the season. This Explorer doesn’t know another way to the finish line.”

The Henderson’s Terrible 300 race course was a fast one. Fast, but the course was strewn with big jagged rocks, the kind of rocks that cut tires and break parts in a hurry. “This was the second race in row that co-driver Jeremy Runyun and I didn’t get out of the truck. Thanks to our 35-inch BFGoodrich Project TA’s we were able to race hard from start to finish without a flat,” stated Douglas.

The Rancho Ford Explorer led Class 3100 all day. Until the final lap of the rugged 65-mile loop race course, the margin over the second place truck of John Holmes was just 1-3 minutes. On the final lap, knowing that Holmes would pick up the pace, Douglas locked the BorgWarner transfer case into four-wheel-drive and stood on the gas. “I wanted a little more cushion, so that if we did have a problem there would be time to fix it,” stated Douglas after the race. But once again, the Explorer was flawless and Douglas opened up a 10-minute lead at the finish line.

“This championship was truly a team effort,” said Scott Douglas. “Douglas Motorsports is fortunate to have a talented crew and the best sponsors. I have to thank Ford Trucks, BFGoodrich, Reider Racing, Precision Gear, Rancho Suspension, DynoMax, BorgWarner, Mastercraft Seats, KC Hilites, Auto Meter K&N, Howe Performance, and MSD Ignition. Everyone involved really earned this championship.”

The victory was career win number 57 for Scott Douglas and his 10th off-road racing championship.

Be sure to catch television coverage of the Henderson’s Terrible 300 Desert Race, it will air February 2, 2005 at 5pm EST on the Outdoor Channel.
