Mexico’s Fuentes wins Class 1
Collins wins SCORE Trophy-Truck, Overall hometown duel
Over Herbst Saturday at 10th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300

Adam Wik captures Class 10 as race-record 198 starters
Challenge rugged Southern Nevada desert

PRIMM, NV (September 10, 2005) -- Renewing their family racing rivalry once again, second-generation Las Vegas desert racers Brian Collins and Tim Herbst dueled in the desert sun Saturday with Collins and co-driver Larry Ragland mastering the elements and their friendly rivals to win the SCORE Trophy-Truck and Overall titles at the 10th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 desert race.

Collins and Ragland split the driving in the 296-mile race in their Collins Motorsports Chevy Silverado, covering the four laps around the rugged 74-mile course just northeast of Buffalo Bill’s Resort in Primm, NV, in five hours, 20 minutes and 52 seconds, with an average speed of 55.35 miles per hour.

Herbst kept it close all afternoon, finishing second overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck in the Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150 in 5:24:52, three minutes, 30 seconds behind Collins/Ragland.

Leading from the first lap when Collins ran the fastest lap of the day in 1:17:39 (57.18mph), and held at lead of just of 2:18 over Tim Herbst when he turned the wheel over to the veteran Ragland after Lap 2.

After three laps, Ragland extended the lead over Herbst, who drove solo in the race as his brother Ed continues his recovery from shoulder surgery in late July, to 5:11. Herbst closed the gap by nearly two minutes on the final lap, but Ragland held him off to secure the second career SCORE Trophy-Truck win for Collins and the eighth career race win in SCORE’s marquee racing division for the veteran Ragland.

“This is my old truck and we were having transmission and gear problems,” said Collins. “We got with Barry Singleton and Kevin Couter who prep our motors and they spent a lot of time testing and getting it fixed for this truck and the new truck. I told Larry this truck needs to have an overall, with the near gears and transmission we brought her out. I have spent my life racing against the Herbst family and we grew up together in the desert. It’s nice to finally get another win over them, they are all so good.”

SCORE’s 32nd anniversary season continued with 85 survivors out of a race-record 198 starters, competing in 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks finishing within the eight-hour time limit in the elapsed-time race.

Round 5 of the six-race 2005 SCORE Desert Series, the world’s foremost desert racing series, featured racers from 13 States, Canada, Japan, Mexico and South Africa racing on a typically rugged Southern Nevada race course under brilliantly sunny skies with a steady northerly wind keep temperatures fall-like in the high 80s.

For the fourth consecutive year, the race was split into two groups with the open wheel and VW baja bug classes running in the morning. The truck classes, including the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division along with the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel class, raced in the afternoon.

Bob Shephard, Phoenix, finished third overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck in a Chevy CK1500 with a time of 5:43:56.

Earning his first SCORE race win while finishing fifth overall and winning the unlimited Class 1 in a Chevy-powered Porter open-wheel desert race car, Cesar Fuentes, of Juarez, Mexico, was timed in 5:46:20.

Las Vegas’ Adam Wik, who drove solo this race because his wife Bekki Freeman-Wik learned she was pregnant on Wednesday, won Class 10 in a Jimco-Honda. Wik, a renown engine builder, won Class 10 earlier this year at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 with his talented wife driving two of the laps. On Saturday, Wik was the fastest vehicle in the morning section of the race and his time of 6:04:02 was good for 10th overall in the race

Another local team also used their home desert to their advantage. Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren and Bryan Freeman extended their SCORE Overall and Class 1-2/1600 point lead by winning their class by over 10 minutes in a Fraley-VW for the third time in four races this year. It was MacCachren’s fourth class win in this race.

In the SCORE Lite class, teammates James Golden, Newport Beach, CA/Jason Hatz, San Diego drove their Jimco-VW to a narrow 19-second class win over rivals Tom Watson, El Centro, CA/David Scaroni, Heber, Calif. Golden and Watson finished 12th and 13th overall respectively.

Todd Wyllie, New River, AZ, won Class 8 in his Chevy C1500 for the sixth consecutive SCORE race and his second straight Primm win.

In Class 7S, John Holmes, Olivenhain, CA, remained undefeated in 2005, winning for the fourth time in a Ford Ranger.

Winning Class 3 for the third time this year, and the Primm race for the third time in four years were brothers Donald Moss, Sacramento, CA, and Ken Moss, Marysville, CA, in their Ford Bronco.

Mexico’s Eric Fisher, of Ensenada, powered his Garibay-VW to victory in Primm for the fourth straight year.

Other class winners included Tom Brown, Phoenix (Class 5, VW Baja Bug), Ernie Negrete, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 5/1600, VW Baja Bug), Victor Herrera Jr and his father Victor Sr, Tijuana, Mexico (Class 7, Ford Ranger), Noe Sierra, San Bernardino, Calif. (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger), John Griffin, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Stock Full, Hummer H1) and Mark Murrell, Grand Junction, Colo. (Class 11, VW Sedan).

The chase for the $50,000 Kartek Off-Road bonus for the top three 2005 SCORE Overall point leaders heated up even more with the tight class races in Primm.

The race was also part of the annual Toyota Milestone Awards and $12,000 Toyota True Grit programs. The prestigious Toyota Milestone Awards are presented to every racer who completes every required mile of every race in the 2004 SCORE Desert Series. The $12,000 Toyota True Grit purse is split among the SCORE season point champions who are also Toyota Milestone award winners in four non-factory-backed classes.

Co-title sponsors for the 10th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 are Las Vegas Events and Primm Valley Resorts. Associate sponsor is Lucas Oil, who is also presenting sponsor for the race telecast which will air on the Outdoor Life Network on Sept. 21.

SCORE official sponsors for 2005 are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, C.L. Bryant-VP Racing Fuels-official fuel supplier. Associate sponsors are: Tecate Beer, Coca-Cola of Mexico, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance, Las Vegas Events, Herbst Gaming, Kartek Off-Road, Centrix Financial, Fram, Autolite, Prestone, Bilstein, Signpros, Cotuco, Fideicomiso Publico para la Promocion Turistica de Ensenada, P.C.I. Race Radios, McKenzie’s Performance Products, and Advanced Color Graphics.

The season finale of the six-race 2005 SCORE Desert Series will be the 38th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert racing, to be held Nov. 17-20, starting in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
