take home 2005 CORR Lucas Oil Pro Series titles

Chula Vista, CA (September 25, 2005) -- Championship Off Road Racing returned to southern California at the inaugural Nissan Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, reuniting a sport with fans who have missed the non-stop action of short course off-road racing.

The conclusion of the 2005 CORR Lucas Oil Pro Series highlighted the weekend, with Rounds 13 and 14 taking place at the Chula Vista International Off-Road Raceway. At the Nissan Off Road Championships, drivers who have had past success in motorsports took their turn in off-road racing. Boris Said (NASCAR), Roberto Guerrero (Indy 500 veteran) and Jeremy McGrath (7-time Motocross champion) each climbed in a CORR Pro-2 truck for the first time.

The championship chase was intense on the 1.7 mile high speed track, and in the end, three former champions secured their CORR Lucas Oil Pro Series titles, as John Greaves, Carl Renezeder and Jeff Kincaid added yet another trophy to their distinguished racing careers.

Entering Round 13, Carl Renezeder was coming off two straight victories in Crandon, overtaking Scott Taylor for the Pro-2 division lead, 173-158. Taylor, the 6-time defending division champion, was looking to keep his title defense alive, but when Taylor had to pull off the track on the first lap with mechanical problems, and if Renezeder could continue his streak of top-three finishes, Renezeder would be the first driver since Ricky Johnson (1998) to unseat Taylor as the division champion.

Indeed, Renezeder finished third in Round 13 (his 7th top-three finish in the last seven rounds), winning the Pro-2 championship in his Lucas Oil Chevrolet. Dan Vanden Heuvel piloted his Amsoil/Kumho Tire Chevrolet to the checkered flag to his second victory of the year, holding off the Red Bull Ford of Steve Barlow and Renezeder.

In Round 14, Vanden Heuvel made it 2 for 2 for the weekend, when he took the victory over Barlow and Taylor. Taylor took the lead from the start, and maintained that lead until Lap 11, when Renezeder passed Taylor. Renezeder was penalized for passing under a yellow flag, and in the final three laps, Vanden Heuvel took the lead, finishing his season with 3 victories. Barlow finished 2nd for the second time in a row, his best finish of the season. Taylor ended his 6-year reign of the Pro-2 division placing third. In the final standings, Renezeder finished with 192 points, followed by Vanden Heuvel with 173 and Taylor with 171.

In the Pro-Lite division, Chad Hord’s BOSS Snowplow Nissan Frontier held a 159-153 lead over the Forest County Potawatomi Toyota of Jeff Kincaid following Round 12, and it was clear that it would be a battle to the end for the division leaders. In Round 13, defending division champion Kyle LeDuc took the lead from Art Schmitt on the third lap, and displaying the power of his Skyjacker Ford, LeDuc held the lead for eight laps until a flat tire slowed him down, allowing Kincaid to take over the lead, and holding on for the win. Hord was right behind Kincaid, placing second. With Kincaid winning and Hord placing second, Hord’s lead was trimmed to a razor-thin two points, 175-173.

With one round to decide the 2005 Pro-Lite championship, Kincaid and Hord were ready to challenge each other for both the win in Round 14 and the division championship. Kincaid came off the start strong, trailing Steven Federico on the first two laps, but on Lap three, Kincaid took the lead, with Kyle LeDuc in second, and Hord in third. The stage was set for Kincaid and Hord on Lap 9, when LeDuc flipped, moving Hord into second.

Battling through lapped traffic and yellow flag zones, Hord inched closer to Kincaid, and while he was battling to catch Kincaid with two laps remaining, he rolled his truck, allowing Kincaid to coast to his third straight victory, and the 2005 Pro-Lite championship. Kincaid won the division championship for the fifth time in the last six years (2000-2003, 2005). The final point margin for Kincaid over Hord was 193-189. Federico finished 2nd in Round 14, giving him sole possession of third in the final division standings with 159 points.

Johnny Greaves continues to etch his name in Championship Off Road Racing history. Greaves started his CORR career with consecutive Pro-Lite championships in 1998 and 1999. In 2000, Greaves moved into the Pro-2 division. In 2002, Greaves claimed his first Pro-4 championship. Greaves and his Forest County Potawatomi Toyota team were ready to maintain an 11-point lead entering Round 13 over Carl Renezeder to win a second Pro-4 championship. Greaves’ quest for the championship began in Round 8 (Topeka), which was the first win of a 5 race win streak.

Indeed, Renezeder was within reach of Greaves, but a sweep of Rounds 13 and 14 gave Greaves the 2005 Pro-4 championship, 222-203 over Renezeder. Greaves’ 7-consecutive wins broke a record he and Jeff Kincaid shared for consecutive wins in the CORR Lucas Oil Pro Series. Greaves (1999) and Kincaid (2000) both won five straight races earlier in their career, but Greaves finished his season in style with seven straight. Renezeder finished second in both rounds, giving him second place in the division standings. Jason Baldwin, the 2004 division champion, finished the season third in the final standings with 192 points.

Pro-2 drivers Jeremy McGrath, Roberto Guerrero, and Boris Said completed their first experience in off-road racing, with all three gaining valuable experience getting ready for the Nissan Nationals Shootout next weekend (October 1-2). McGrath finished 5th in Round 13 and 4th in Round 14, while Guerrero finished 9th both rounds, and Said finished 14th in Round 13.

With the stress of the 2005 season behind them, the CORR Pro-4, Pro-2, and Pro-Lite drivers will join their desert brethren (Unlimited Desert Truck; Unlimited Desert Buggy/Super Buggy; Desert Class 10/12/Single Buggy; Desert 1600 Buggy, and Desert Truck 7/7S) next week for the $323,000 cash purse Nissan Nationals shootout.
