Team HUMMER® To Introduce H3 Race Truck at "Vegas to Reno"

Reno, NV - October 5, 2005: The TSCO ‘Vegas to Reno’, fourth race on Best in the Desert Racing Association’s 2005 racing schedule, kicks off with registration and tech inspection at the Gold Coast Hotel in Las Vegas on Thursday, October 6th. Friday morning, the race moves to the start line in Johnnie, Nevada, 60 miles west of ‘Tinsel Town’ to begin the 495 mile trek north, where it will conclude sometime around midnight, just south of Reno, Nevada.

Fresh off a big win at the McMillin ‘Nevada 1000’, Team HUMMER’s Chad Hall will be the first Team entry to start in the #8102 H1 pickup truck. We had our share of troubles with repeated breakage of the rear half shafts at the ‘Nevada 1000’ but after a body off preparation of the truck, chief mechanic, Brad Falin, is confident that this nagging problem is finally behind us. The ride height was lowered in the rear of the H1 to decrease the operating angle of the constant velocity joints which he feels is the reason for the recent outbreak of failures of the rear axles. Additionally, numerous components were replaced as the Falin brothers set about the task of repairing the extensive damage sustained by the H1 in the process of winning the ‘Nevada 1000’, one of the toughest off-road races in the world. After testing the H1, Chad feels that the truck is once again ready to meet the challenge of another endurance race across the Nevada desert. This will be one of the last races for the aging Pickup as construction of the new Duramax powered H1 Alpha is nearing completion and is scheduled to debut at the ‘Parker 425’ in February of 2006. Before making that transition, however, the Team HUMMER crew is confident that the #8102 H1 pickup is not done winning races!

After winning every Best in the Desert race since the 2004 ‘Vegas to Reno’, Josh Hall brings the points leading #4103 H2 Team HUMMER SUV to this year’s race with every expectation of extending his BitD winning streak to seven (7). After replacing the upper & lower control arms, rebuilding all the shocks and doing a thorough race prep on the SUV to cast off the effects of the ‘Nevada 1000’, the H2 is almost ready for the ‘Vegas to Reno’. Chief H2 mechanic, Sam Cothrun has only to install a set of Caterpillar air horns on the SUV to let the competition know we want to pass. “Hopefully” says Cothrun, “if they know we’re coming, they’ll pull over so I don’t have to spend so much time replacing the front bumper after each race.”

Coming in from the GM Proving Ground, in Arizona, is the new Team HUMMER H3 SUV which will be driven by team owner Rod Hall. The H3 will compete in Class 3100 for mid-sized SUVs and will carry number 3111 at the BitD events. The truck was built entirely at the GM Proving Ground by Team Leader Thad Stump and the GM Development Group, who also built the H2. Fox Shox developed the shocks for the truck and Hall was very excited after his first test drive in the new #3100 H3 SUV. “They have done an incredible job with this truck!” he said. “I feel like a young man on his first date; I like her so much that I have to remind myself to slow down and get to know what I can and can’t do.” Interesting metaphor, but the fact is that Rod feels so comfortable in the H3 that he intends to solo the entire 495 miles of the ‘Vegas to Reno’. “I’m a short wheelbase guy and at 5400 lbs, this HUMMER is just the right size for me. This is a honey of a truck and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be the driver.”

Team HUMMER has a formidable trio of entries in the TSCO ‘Vegas to Reno’ race and will all be a factor in this event. Never one to make brash predictions about the outcome of any race, team owner Rod Hall commented, “I don’t know how things will shake out by the time we get to the finish but one thing I can say for sure: Team HUMMER is ready for this race and the competition had better be ready for Team HUMMER.”
