Nick Baldwin/Jeff Lewis RENO, NV (October 11, 2005) -- Returning
to Desert Racing after spending the last couple of years building a new truck
and dreaming of the day they
would race again. Nick Baldwin and Jeff Lewis ran a near flawless race Baldwin and Lewis split the driving in the 495-mile race in their Riveria Motorsports Monarch Resorts sponsored Ford F-150, covering the point to point course across the State of Nevada, in nine hours, seventeen minutes and fifty-five seconds. Nick Baldwin started the race 17th off the line and quickly moved to the front of the pack by mile 85 at which point Baldwin was running in 5th place and within one minute of the leader Mark & Gary Weyhrich in their LS1 powered Jimco Class One buggy. With the eight lead trucks and buggies all physically within one minute of
the Weyhrichs Class 1 Jimco, and a good 3 minutes ahead of the remaining field,
everyone was feeling the pressure and starting to make small driving errors,
Mile 130 Nick has his first flat and is passed by several trucks. Mile 154, Weyhrichs are still leading the race and Brian Baldwin is on the gas only to over shoot a long sweeping left hand turn, hitting yet another fence, leaving his right side body panels hanging on the fence and needs to stop about a mile down track to remove barbwire from his chassis and in the process is passed by several trucks. Mile 227, Weyhrich is hanging tough leading the race and shows no sign of slowing down or succumbing to the pressure of seven other teams all physically within seconds of over taking the lead. The lead pack has now pulled roughly 10 minutes ahead of the next closest competitor. Mile 245 at Pit 8, Nick Baldwin turns driving duties over to Jeff Lewis who leaves the pits in 5th place trailing behind Weyhrich, Kincaid, Leduc and Feldenkamp.
Scott Kincaid takes over the lead at mile 320 and is experiencing the excitement and adrenaline rush of leading his first major event with Feldenkamp, LeDuc and Jeff Lewis all within seconds of overtaking the lead. Mile 385, only 110 miles left with the suns starting to set, Scott Kincaid is still leading the race with Feldenkamp, LeDuc and Jeff Lewis still within seconds of overtaking the lead when at about 90 mph Kincaid gets swallowed up and spit out of a three foot deep hole and flips 4 times stopping with the LS1 powered Porter built Class 1 on it side, only breaking off the light bar. After a short period of communication with his crew chief, Scott gets his car back on it’s wheels and continues the race. As a result of Kincaids mishap Bud Feldenkamp is now physically leading the race followed by LeDuc and Lewis with 110 miles of racing left. Then Leduc suffers a flat allowing Lewis to secure second and then thirty miles from the finish Lewis has a flat, fearful Leduc may pass, both team members jump out to change the tire and manage to get back underway without losing a position. Lewis pushes his truck to its limits in hopes of catching Feldenkamp, only to discover Feldenkamp has suffered two flats only four miles from the finishline, allowing Lewis to cross the finishline for the overall win seven minutes fiftynine seconds ahead of second place finisher Curt LeDuc and Bud Feldkamp in third.
