Indy 500 veteran Roberto Guerrero to drive for Immke Racing
For Immediate Release - Immke Racing is proud to announce the signing of Indy racing veteran Roberto Guerrero to drive their Castrol Pro Truck entry in the 2006 SCORE Desert Racing Series. Guerrero, 47, originally from Medellin, Colombia, competed in Formula One for two seasons before coming to America and spending the next 17 years in CART and the Indy Racing League. He quickly made a name for himself at the 1984 Indianapolis 500 when he drove to a phenomenal second place finish and shared Rookie of the Year honors with Michael Andretti. Guerrero became a regular threat to win the 500 as he reeled off an impressive record of four consecutive top five finishes in his first four starts at the Brickyard. He solidified his place in Indianapolis 500 history when he won the pole for the 1992 event with a track record run at over a 232 MPH average, a record that stood for four years. After driving with him through the desert in a Baja Challenge buggy (during a pre Baja 1000 test), it became abundantly clear that Roberto is what we are looking for in a teammate. He is really fast, but more importantly, I have never met anyone with more patience! And patience is paramount while racing 1,000 mile races through the desert. If you let the excitement of the battle get the best of you in one of these events you are very likely to make a mistake at the end of the day. Roberto has been through more taxing race experiences than most of us can dream of. He is not going to get rattled." In recent years, Guerrero has left the pavement behind for a career in desert racing. No stranger to the rigors of off road racing, he finished second in the 2004 Baja 1000. "Racing is racing; it's still a car with four wheels and a steering wheel. The driving and the level of concentration it takes is the same,lt Guerrero said. iaOn a road course, you can go 100% all the time because you know the course and what to expect. In the desert, you never know what is around the next bend or jump; it's a lot of fun and very challenging. I've been working with Wide Open Baja, giving tours in the buggies, so I've spent a lot of time driving the course and learning the terrain. I've competed in the Baja 1000 four times, starting in the year 2000 when it was a 2,000 mile race."Guerrero will make his Immke Racing debut in the team™s 2006 Pro Truck entry. Immke Racing put on a strong performance during the recent Baja 1000, leading the competitive Baja Challenge class for several hours before late race troubles dropped them from the top spot. Co-drivers for the Castrol entry will be announced at a later date. "We expect to be a strong contender for the 2006 Pro Truck championship. The entire effort for 2006 is first class from top to bottom. Signing Roberto is just another demonstration of how seriously we are taking the Pro Truck racing program and our commitment to winning,lt Place said. "I' m really excited about joining Immke Racing and driving the Pro Truck. I' m anxious to test and hope to contribute to the team, finish races and be competitive," said Guerrero. Fans can track the progress of the Castrol entry on the team's website, www.immkeracing.com for the latest news and photos as it happens during the 2006 season. Roberto Guerrero Career Highlights:
