Round 2, SCORE Desert Series
Ortner receives first motorcycle start as nearly 300 entries expected in March 11 desert race in Mexico LOS ANGELES - Southern Californias Cameron Steele and Richard Boyle received the pole positions in the top two divisions in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Monday for the upcoming 20th Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Steele races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Boyle drives in the unlimited Class 1 Round 2 of the six-race 2006 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 11 in the tiny fishing village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. With nearly 300 entries expected to compete in 24 Pro and 5 Sportsman classes, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes two hours later at approximately 8:30 a.m. The start and finish line area for the 240.34-mile loop course will once again be the landmark San Felipe arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. All vehicles will have a 10-hour time limit in the elapsed time race and vehicles will start in 30-second intervals. Following January?s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, Americas Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three times in 2006. Drawing the first starting slot for the motorcycle classes was Jon Ortner, Santa Barbara, Calif., on a Honda CRF450x. The first ATV off the line will be the Yamaha YFZ450 of Rodrigo Rubio, Menifee, Calif. Steele, an ESPN action-sports announcer from San Clemente, Calif., has entered in three classes for San Felipe. Steele drives the Desert Assassins No. 16 Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy-Truck. With a race-record 29 entries so far in the class for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Steele and Stout will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world?s top desert racers. Boyle, 41, Ridgecrest, Calif., is a veteran SCORE racer, teams with 1985 SCORE Class 1 season point champ Ron Brant, 57, Oak Hills, Calif., in a Jimco-Chevy. Boyle/Brant also drew the first start last year in this race. In Mondays computerized drawing, Class 1-2/1600 had the most entries
with 34, followed by Class 1 with 32, SCORE Trophy-Truck with 29, SCORE Lite
with 20 and Class 10 with 14. With late registration accepted up until race
morning, a total of 239 vehicles officially entered in time for the drawing. Besides Steele, the stellar SCORE Trophy-Truck field includes Las Vegas brothers Tim and Ed Herbst, with eight combined San Felipe class wins, including four overall victories in their No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150. Despite an extremely rare did-not-finish in 2004, the Herbst brothers won the SCORE Trophy-Truck division in San Felipe three straight years (1999, 2000, 2001). 2004 SCORE Trophy-Truck race winner Mark Post returns in his No. 3 Riviera Racing Ford F-150. This is way too cool, to draw the first starting position in SCORE Trophy-Truck for the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, said Steele, who will also be racing in SCORE Lite and in Class 22. We had our game plan in place already before the drawing and this could make it even easier to get it done. It won?t be easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. I am racing in Class 22 with my younger brother Grant and my best friend Trigger Gumm as a way to honor my dad (former SCORE racer Mark Steele), who will be celebrating his 70th birthday in Mexico while overseeing our chase crew. My plan is to start on the motorcycle, ride the first part of the course, then return to the start line to drive solo in SCORE Trophy-Truck. We have options, but the primary plan is to finish in SCORE Trophy-Truck and my crew will take me back to the closest access point and take over the SCORE Lite car from teammate Justin Smith. Steele, whose wife Heidi Steele will make her debut in Class 7SX by drawing first start in her new Ford Ranger, will ride a Suzuki DRZ450 in Class 22 and a Desert Assassin-VW in SCORE Lite. After a sixth-place class finish in Laughlin in SCORE Trophy-Truck and a win in SCORE Lite in the season-open, Steele enters San Felipe definitely in the chase for two season class point titles. And, depending on how things go in Class 22, he and his brother and Gumm, a record-setting long-distance motorcycle jumper, may run all three SCORE races in Mexico as well. Among the other racers to draw first starting position in their respective classes were: Alejandro Navarrete, Mexicali, Mexico (Class 1-2/1600, Seagraves-VW), Craig Brabant, Hesperia, Calif. (SCORE Lite, Dunrite-VW) and Chris Wright, Henderson, Nev. (Class 10, Tatum-VW). Fresh from season-opening class wins at the 12th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, Rob MacCachren and Gary Weyhrich find themselves tied for the Overall SCORE Desert Series point lead after one of six-races. Las Vegas MacCachren, won Class 1-2/1600 in a 1600cc VW-powered Bunderson while Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore., captured the unlimited Class 1 in a Jimco-Chevy open-wheel desert race car. MacCachrens primary racing commitment, however, is in SCORE Trophy-Truck. MacCachren and Gus Vildosola, of Mexicali, Mexico, split the driving time in Laughlin and earned a solid fourth-place finish out of a SCORE record 33 starters in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division in the Vildosola Racing Ford F-150. A total of just 16 points separate the top 15 overall point leaders after Januarys season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge. Third in overall points with 58 after winning the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800 horsepower unlimited production trucks is Las Vegas B.J. Baldwin in the Baldwin Motorsports No. 97 Chevy Silverado. For Baldwin, it was his first SCORE class win and it was also the first race for his new SCORE Trophy-Truck, which is prepped and the race crew is provided by Collins Motorsports of Las Vegas. Tied for fourth in overall points with 54 each are Randy Wilson, Lakewood, Calif., who is second in Class 1 in another Jimco-Chevy and the team of Arden Dennington, Tracey, Calif./Mike Malloy, Henderson, Nev., who are second in Class 1-2/1600 in a Fraley-VW. Just four points separate the next five drivers in SCORE Overall points, led by Carl Renezeder, Laguna Beach, Calif., who is sixth overall and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck with 52 points in a Chevy Silverado. Tied for seventh overall with 50 points are Brian Parkhouse, Bell Gardens, Calif., who is third in Class 1 in a Jimco-Chevy and Aaron Hawley, Las Vegas, who is third in Class 1-2/1600 in a Bunderson-VW. Leading Class 10 with 49 points in an AlumiCraft-VW is Darren Hardesty, Ramona, Calif., while 10 overall and third in SCORE Trophy-Truck are Las Vegas brothers Ed and Tim Herbst with 48 points in a Ford F-150. SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles that started the race within the individual class. Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday (March 10).
