Race-record 30 local starters roar in Mexico
World's Best Desert racers at Las Vegas Motor Speedway,
SAN FELIPE, Mexico—Last weekend’s 20th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, Round 2 of the six-race 2006 SCORE Desert Series, proved to be another record-setting event for the world’s foremost desert racing series. It was also a race-record effort by Southern Nevada racers, led by Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin and Troy Herbst. For the second straight race in 2006, SCORE had a record number of starters as 340 starters, competing in 24 Pro and 5 Sportsman classes, competed in San Felipe, with a race-record 220 of them (64.7 percent) finishing within the 10-hour time limit for the 240.34-mile race. A total of 24 of the race-record 30 Southern Nevada racers (80 percent) finished in San Felipe, including winning four classes and have five racers finish in the top 20 overall among four-wheel entries. By comparison, the Laughlin race had a 50 percent overall finishing rate (115 of 229 cars and trucks). In San Felipe last weekend, B.J. Baldwin, who won the season-opener in Laughlin in January, finished second overall and second in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division in his new Chevy Silverado while Herbst teamed with Larry Roeseler, Hesperia, Calif., to win the unlimited Class 1 and finished third overall in the Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car.
With a race-record 20 of 24 starters (80 percent) finishing, the other locals who finished in SCORE Trophy-Truck were Kory Sheeler (sixth and 17th overall), Mirage Resorts President/CEO Bobby Baldwin (ninth) and brothers Ed and Tim Herbst (11th). In Class 1, Danny Anderson was fourth and sixth overall while Pat Dean was 14th out of 35 starters in the class. Continuing his pinch-hitting success for his pregnant wife Bekki, Adam Wik, Las Vegas, kept the family streak alive, winning Class 10 and finishing 11th overall in a Jimco-Honda. Wik, a noted engine builder who had to rebuild his engine just four days before this race, nearly didn’t make it to the race. He won his second straight race of the year and third out of the last four. Wik has been the driver of record for his wife since September. Bekki Freeman, who is expecting the couple’s first child in May, won Class 10 in last year’s Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 prior to starting her expected short sabbatical from desert racing. In the Protruck Class, Henderson’s Bryan Freeman was split the driving with driver of record Gus Vildosola Jr., of Mexico, to win for the second straight race. Picking up the fourth class victory for a local was Tom Willis, who was one of three co-riders for Jim O’Neal, who teamed to win Class 40 for motorcycle riders over 40 years old on a Honda XR650R. SCORE also announced in San Felipe that the same race format will be used for the upcoming SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup II, returning July 27-39 to the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. SCORE Trophy-Truck and Class 1 will be the featured divisions during the racing under the lights at LVMS. Additionally, there will be a race for Class 1-2/1600 along with a race for a combined group of Class 10/SCORE Lite and another combined group for the mini trucks of Class 7/Class 7S/Class 7SX. Before Las Vegas though, SCORE heads to Mexico again, June 2-4, for the 38 Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada. 20th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250
