G&R Racing Earns First Overall at SCORE San Felipe Mesa, Arizona (March 23, 2006) - The G&R Racing team of Garron Cadiente and Ron Whitton took their Geiser Brothers built and prepped Trophy Trucks to San Felipe looking for some fun, a couple of solid runs, and finishes. They came away from the 20th Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 with much better than that - An overall win in the Trophy Truck class for Garron, and a very competitive fourth place finish for Ron. "The rain made it a level playing field" commented Ron Whitten after the race. "It allowed us to run up on people with no dust." Both Garron and Ron did just that, after Garron started 23th in class, and Ron started 18th. Garron finished second on the road, and first where it counted - on the clock - completing the 240 plus miles in 3 hours, 52 minutes, 47 seconds at a blistering pace of 61.95 miles per hour. The team did do their homework, spending three days pre-running, and changing a suspect right rear hub seal on Garronn's #38 Trophy Truck before the race. Race day was an overcast morning, with dark clouds on the looming over the race course. "It was just starting to sprinkle as we were leaving the hotel, so I ran back in and grabbed 10 towels" said Garron's trusted co-driver, Chris Godfrey. "I just went out there trying to be consistent, and run a clean race" said Garron. "We caught a couple of guys at Zoo road, and by mile 20 a few more had dropped out. I just kept an even pace going, not hanging it out there, and just trying not to hit anything." The team was in the top three after the first 100 miles. They took a fuel dump at race mile 130, and were within 2 minutes of B.J. Baldwin, and Bob Shepard who were leading at the time. "I started picking it up in the Matomi Wash, and that's where we passed Bob Shepard, who was limping on a bent drive shaft." With team manager Brian Godfrey calling the shots from the helicopter, and giving split times on the competition, Garron knew exactly where he stood as the race was drawing to a close. "There was no way Garron wanted to lose by 30 seconds," quipped Godfrey. "In the last 30 miles, Garron was really on it, and didn't lift for anything." The team had a super clean race, with no mishaps to slow their day. The truck's BF Goodrich tires were up to the challenge, and neither Ron nor Garron had a single flat. Ron Whitten's race report was very similar to Garron's. "I was feeling a little intimidated at the start," admitted Ron. "These are the big boys out there, that have been doing this for a long time... So I just drove competitively, and never really hung it out there." San Felipe was only Ron's second time to drive the truck in competition. Ron's co-drover, Gerald "Smitty" King gave Ron plenty of kudos after the race. "The rain made the track a lot of fun, and it got slippery. Ron drove very responsibly and controlled." Ron finished in fourth place in the very competitive SCORE Trophy Truck class, completing the race in 4 hours, 30 minutes and 12 seconds averaging 53.37 miles per hour. The Geiser Brother built truck worked very well, and the team had no problems during the entire race. So who are these guys anyway? G&R Racing is a family oriented team hailing from Mesa, Arizona. Ron Whitten is the founder of Whitten Companies, a prominent contractor in the Phoenix area. Garron is Ron's Son-in-law, and the two have a great bond that allows them to pursue these adventure sports together. The team's adventures began in the Glamis sand dunes, with both Garron and Ron spending their weekends like so many of us do in the dunes. They both had Dunebuggy.com sand cars, and when the Dunebuggy.com guys developed a "dual sport" buggy, the men traded their sand cars for the desert racing capable machines. They ran at MDR Barstow and in Whiplash, and with first in class finishes in their rookie attempts, the guys were hooked on desert racing. The quest for parts for their Sidewinder car brought them to the Geiser Brothers shop, in Phoenix, Arizona where they were introduced to the Trophy Truck machines, and the capabilities of the Geiser Brothers. "When I first looked at those trucks, I thought - No Way!" said Garron in talking about the team's history. "But the next day we went over and looked at Gary Dircks's truck, and wrote him a check the next day!" The rest is history... in the making. With a taste of the performance of the #38 Trophy Truck, They ordered up a sibling from the Geiser Brothers that has become the #39 machine currently campaigned by Ron. The team has very little racing experience, and in fact Garron's truck has much more experience than he does. The team's first race was the 2005 Nevada 1000, where an over zealous Garron crashed the truck real hard on day two of the competition. They then raced at the 2005 SCORE Primm race earning a 6th place, then a finish at the BITD Vegas to Reno, and then the Baja 1000 where they finished 7th. Ron's truck was finished for the 2006 SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, where both trucks had some issues, but finished. Ron's first time behind the wheel came at the 2006 BITD Parker 425. With an overall win for Garron, and a fourth place finish for Ron at the SCORE Tecate San Felipe 250, the G&R Racing team is looking forward to the remaining races of the six race SCORE schedule for 2006. This team is all about having fun, demonstrating a competitive spirit, and growing in the off-road racing sport. These guys are learning something every race, and are gaining experience and momentum going forward. The G&R Race Team is sponsored by Whitton Companies, Geiser Brothers Design & Development, Vision X Off-Road Lighting, BFGoodrich Tires, King Shocks, True Flow Filters, Patton Racing Engines, Dirt Skins, F&L Racing Fuel and Jugans Kustom Paint. Garron and Ron would personally like to thank all the team members for their dedication and hard work including Chris Godfrey (#38 Navigator), Gerald King (#39 Navigator), Brian Godfrey (Team Manager), Mike Williams (Assistant Team Manager / Hauler Driver / Chase Captain), Steve Godfrey(Assistant Team Manager / Chase Captain), Brian "Cheeseburger" Wibel (TT Mechanic / Chase Captain), Brandon Mattice (TT Fabricator / Chase Captain), Justin Morcom (TT Fabricator / Chase Captain), Ron Whitton Jr. (Video Production Manager / Team Chef / Chase Member), Jeff Geiser (TT Builder / Replacement Driver / Chase Member), Snowe Williams (Hauler Navigator / Chase Member), Johnny Urias (Fueling Specialist / Chase Member), Jimmy Overson (Fueling Specialist / Chase Member), Barry Weigle (Helicopter Pilot), Tony Hellickson (Chase Member), Zach Duncan (Chase Member), and Rob Novelie (Chase Member).
