Round 5 of 2006 SCORE Desert Series
SCORE's 33rd season continues Sept. 8-10 with over 200 entries expected In 17 Pro & 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks LOS ANGELES—Adding another exciting benchmark to an already phenomenal rookie racing season, Garron Cadiente has drawn the coveted first starting position for next month's 11th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 desert race. Round 5 of the six-race 2006 SCORE Desert Series will be held Sept. 8-10 in Primm, Nev. In a sport where there is no qualifying or open pre-running (in the U.S.), the drawing for start positions has added significance and the No. 38 G&R Racing Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck was selected randomly in Wednesday's computerized drawing at the SCORE Int’l headquarters in Los Angeles. Celebrating its 33rd season this year as the World's Foremost Desert Racing Series, the SCORE Desert Series will be returning to Southern Nevada for the last of its three annual races in the U.S. The 11th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will feature 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks in Primm, located 45 miles south of Las Vegas at the California border. This year's starting list is expected to eclipse last year's race-record field of 198 starters. For the fifth consecutive year, the race will be split into two groups with the open wheel and VW baja bug classes starting at 6 a.m. The truck classes, including the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division along with the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars, will start at 1 p.m. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with an eight-hour time limit. The start/finish line area will be located 2.5 miles northeast of the rear of Buffalo Bill's Resort in Primm. A total of 26 SCORE Trophy-Trucks, were entered in time for the start draw, and the 800-horsepower unlimited production trucks will lead the afternoon group into the Southern Nevada desert. The first vehicle to leave the start line in the morning portion of the event will be Class 10 racer Darren Hardesty, 38, of Ramona, Calif., in a VW-powered AlumiCraft open-wheel desert race car. Eleven of last year's 17 class winners have entered so far, including nine of last year's top 10 overall finishers. I started 22nd last year in Primm in my first SCORE race, so this is a great opportunity for me”, said Cadiente, 30 of Mesa, Ariz. 'If I can stay out front for the first lap, we will be in a good position when we start catching the lapped race traffic. If I can hold my pace for the final three laps and not get into any trouble, we will have a great opportunity to pick up a lot of points, move up in the SCORE Trophy-Truck standings and maybe even pick up a race win. It's a very tough course, but I learned a lot racing on it last year.” Cadiente grew up playing baseball in high school and college and last year's SCORE Primm 300 was his first desert race. His debut resulted with a sixth place finish in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division. In just his third SCORE race, Cadiente was the Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck winner at the 20th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March. He is also currently in fifth place in the SCORE Trophy-Truck season point standings. With the active partnership of his father-in-law, Ron Whitton, G&R racing was launched last year and Whitton in the No. 39 G&R Racing Ford F-150 will join Cadiente in the talented SCORE Trophy-Truck starting grid for the 11th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300. Whitton drew the 24th starting position in the class. Starting behind the 26 SCORE Trophy-Trucks will be the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars. In the first 10 years of the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, SCORE Trophy-Trucks have six Overall race wins while Class 1 has four. Drawing the first starting spot in Class 1 was Mike Bilek, of Tustin, Calif. George Seeley, Glendale, Calif., and Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico, have the most class wins in the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300. Both have won their respective classes in six of the first nine years of this race. Seeley drives an unlimited VW Baja Bug in Class 5 while Solorzano drives a VW Sedan in Class 11. Las Vegas-based Collins Motorsports team, with Las Vegas’ Brian Collins and Larry Ragland, Cave Creek, Ariz. as drivers, is back to defend his overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck titles in the No. 12 Chevy Silverado. Collins/Ragland won last year's classic battle of hometown racers by 3 minutes, 30 seconds over the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck of Las Vegas brothers Tim and Ed Herbst. Collins/Ragland will start fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck this year after winning last year after also being the fourth off the starting line. With one class win and three top five finishes, Las Vegas B.J. Baldwin has launched himself to the top of both the Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck points after three rounds in the 2006 SCORE Desert Series. Baldwin, who has been desert racing since he graduated from Durango High School in Las Vegas in 1997, is leading the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800 horsepower unlimited production trucks in the Baldwin Motorsports No. 97 Chevy Silverado and the SCORE Overall standings with 213 points. He will be the sixth SCORE Trophy-Truck off the line in Primm. Second in Overall points, just one point behind Baldwin are the unlimited Class 1 point leaders—brothers Gary and Mark Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore. In a Chevy-powered Jimco, while third Overall and second in Class 1 after his second straight class win this season at June’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and 20th Class 1 victory since 1997 is Las Vegas Troy Herbst and co-driver Larry Roeseler, Hesperia, Calif., in a Smithbuilt-Ford. Behind Class 1 (41 entries), the classes with the most entries in time for the drawing were: SCORE Trophy-Truck (26), Class 1-2/1600 (20), Class 10 (19) and SCORE Lite (14). Fourth in overall four-wheel vehicle points with 202 is defending SCORE overall and Class 1-2/1600 season point champion Caleb Gaddis, El Centro, Calif., who is leading his class again this year in a Curry-VW. Fifth overall and third in Class 1 is the team of Richard Boyle, Ridgecrest, Calif./Ron Brant, Oak Hills, Calif., with 198 points in a Jimco-Chevy. The highly-competitive SCORE Desert Series has 15 racers separated by just 30 points in the Overall standings after the 12th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, 20th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 and 38th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert races. All three races had race-record starting grids, with 233 leaving the line in Laughlin, 341 starting in San Felipe, and an amazing Mexican-record 438 taking the green flag in Ensenada. Among the other racers drawing first starting positions for this race is the team of Joe Barboa, Basque Farms, N.M./Kelly Ross, Parker, Colo., who will lead Class 1-2/1600 in a 1600cc Jimco-VW and the team of Stan Potter, San Marcos, Calif./Dan Worley, Encinitas, Calif.., who will be at the front of SCORE Lite in a Jimco-VW. Pre-race festivities on Friday, Sept. 8, for the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, including tech and contingency and the SCORE Manufacturer's Midway, will be held from Noon to 6 p.m. behind Buffalo Bill's Resort. The post-race awards celebration will be held at the Star of the Desert Arena on Sunday (Sept. 10) at 9 a.m. The 2006 SCORE Desert Series includes chase for the $50,000 Kartek Off-Road contingency bonus to be awarded to several qualified 2006 SCORE Class point champions. The 2006 SCORE Desert Series also involves the hunt for the annual Toyota Milestone and $12,000 Toyota True Grit Awards.
