Oh boy! Where do I start this time? Here we are after missing the last race (The MORE Night Race) in July do to some major changes to the truck. As most of you know, Lloyd and I have been engineering a new front suspension since last year and fabricating it the last 4 months. While undergoing the new front end with the anticipation of going faster we decided to replace the complete roll cage in the truck. WOW, what a job that was but a job well need and turned out better than expected. As stated above about the last 4 months, our wives and families have been very patient with us especially the last month with Lloyd and I coming home at all hours of the night just tired as can be as with Nick Cerulle one of our co-drivers also helped the last 2 weeks and our crew chief Jeff Carley also jumped in the last week just to make this race happen. 7 days a week and midnights were a common thing the last few weeks.
OK, here we go! After getting the truck race-able Thursday afternoon at 1:30, we drove the truck as far as it would go out of the shop to only have to put 2 more quarts in the transmission. Once we got it out of the shop, it went straight into the trailer and off to the track. After getting to the track I pulled the truck out of the trailer so I could unhitch the trailer from the Motorhome. Lloyd showed up about 8am Friday morning to find me still in bed. O'well! We gave the truck one last look over and put our helmets on to take a test ride to see how it was and wound up making it a test run all the way around the 30 mile race course and came back going "H*** S*** that works great"! With no adjustments except for greasing the steering rack (we forgot), Lloyd and Ron (one of our crew members) jumped it for a lap. About 20 minutes later they came back. Now I'm worried and Lloyd and Ron got out and I looked at them and asked, "what happened" to which Lloyd laughed and said "nothing, lets go race, there's no need to wear it out"! He only went the first 11 miles of the race course and thought the same as I. Saturday morning all the team was either there or showing up early. Start time was 9:00 and we took the green in 10 second intervals shortly there after with a rear start in our class. 10 miles into the race we were in the lead and running strong. You have to remember that I said the truck was race-able. That's right, we didn't have enough time to finish the fabrication work and left some critical parts for top speed off so we could only run the truck at about 70-75%. The truck ran so good that I clocked a 41 minute lap, a 40 and with a driver and co-driver change, a 45 minute lap. Lloyd drove lap 4, 5 and 6 with a 39 minute, 41 and 39 minute lap. These lap time were just off the elite Class one times. With time sparing we ran 2 more laps to give a couple of the girls the sensation of a race pace in competition for there upcoming MORE Powder Puff race in October in Barstow. More on that race later. As you have guessed by now, YES we did win our 11th straight race last week. We also made a few changes to the way this truck performed to get there and that was a fresh TPD motor, changing to BFG Project tires, our new King 3" By-Pass Shocks in the front and now using the Beard Ultra Pro II Seats. What a difference in the ride and comfort these products make! We only had one problem with the truck and that was with the rear-end which we found Monday night as we tore the truck down. We don't know if it was do to this race or from the last race in May at the Beard Seat Shootout as I say again, we didn't have time to finish or really prep the truck like we do. Actually, we never even looked at the back half of the truck before this race. After reviewing the parts in question and consulting with Speedway Engineering and Ron from Ron's Rear-Ends, we now have installed some new prototype parts last night to test with. Our team for this race consisted of Chris, Cameron, Stu, both Ron's, Tim, Barry from the BITD Series, Ed (papa Crone), Jeff, Bobby, Nick, Lloyd and myself along with all our wives and kids. Thank you to you all! I really mean it. I am also enclosing a few pics of what the truck looked like 8 weeks ago with no roll cage and 3 weeks ago.
