| short-course section, accommodating spectator
stands, hospitality areas, a manufacturers' midway and the pit area and
then loops out the desert, with lap times for the Protrucks of approximately
15 minutes. The overall elapsed times from both Saturday and Sunday's
races are combined to award the victory. Protrucks raced with the Trophy
Trucks and the Class 8 trucks, besting all of the Class 8s on Saturday
and Sunday. |
Saturday Round
Scott Steinberger of Signal Hill, CA executed the quintessential come-from-behind
victory on Saturday, having started in the fifth row of the 10 starters. Charging
hard from flag to flag, Scott drove the LYCOS/PCI-Ford #270 along with the
Protrucks, Class 8s and Trophy Trucks. Scott was the first Protruck across
the finish with the day 1 time of 0:57:15.
Steve Barlow Ford #299 wasn't far behind, driving his Protruck super hard
throughout the race, Steve got a flat tire lap 4 and was the second Protruck
to the finish. Leading in the flock of Protrucks behind Scott and Steve was
Rob Reinertson in the Ford #243, posting in at 3rd and Rich Hoffman in the
EJR Racing Chevy #244 both with the same elapsed time of 0:59:23 (Rob received
a higher placing because his lap 1 time was faster than Rich's). Matt Scaroni,
Ryan Herzog, Tony Licitra, and Steve Olliges came in respectively. Chet Huffman
and newcomer Jason Cobb placed eighth and ninth.
Sunday Round
The field of 9 Protrucks went off the line in opposite order of finish, starting
with the last finisher of Day 1, starting first Day 2. The leader of the Sunday
pack was local favorite Steve Olliges, Protruck pilot for Ford #296, Steve
had never driven a Protruck before and was named on how "fast and forgiving"
the Protrucks were, Scott Steinberger, Steve Barlow and Rob Reinertson caught
up quickly, with Scott still into he lead after lap 1; that ended when Scott
lost oil pressure on lap 2 and the battle was between Steve Barlow and Rob
Reinertson for the overall lead, Rob had a broken bump stop, but regained
pace and Steve describes they were sharing the same trail and "rubbing
fenders" from that point on. When lap four concluded, Rob Reinertson
was the first to the finish with Steve Barlow in second. Jason Cobb and the
PartsAmerica.com Ford was third (purchased Plank Motorsports Ford) with the
fastest time for the Sunday round at 0:14:54.
Next through the finish was Steve Olliges, Steve Scaroni (flat tire on lap
3), Tony Licitra, Rich Hoffman, and Scott Steinberger, Ryan Herzog did not
finish.
Rob Reinertson couldn't believe what a beating his Protruck
could take on the tough, intense course! He captured the hard fought second
in the Protruck overall placings clocking in at 1:59:25. Steve Olliges Ford
#296 says he was disappointed for the Saturday race (bump stop replacement
lap 1). After he started to get a feel for the truck, he claims he "was
on a mission Sunday" and never looked back, he placed a surprising third
place into he class in combined time and clocked in at 2:05:33.
In the final combined standings for Protruck Class, Steve Scaroni's
SMD Veg-packer Ford placed fourth and the TL Racing #242 Chevy owned by Tony
Licitra was fifth. Richard Hoffman Chevy #244 out of Illinois posted on sixth
place and Scott Steinberger had a wheel and oil pressure problem Sunday, which
placed him seventh. Eighth place went to Ryan Herzog in his Herzog Electric-Ford.
He completed all four laps on Saturday, but a wheel problem let him only finish
3 laps on Sunday. Jason Cobb and the PartsAmerica.com Ford completed only
two of the four laps on Saturday (fastest time on Sunday), which places him
at ninth in the overall finishing.
